Because he could not yet properly control his single kakugan that manifests in his left eye, he wore a medical eye patch to cover it. His casual outfit consists of a turquoise hoodie, light black pants, running shoes with a yellow toe and blue outlines reaching the middle of the black base of the soles.Īt work, he wore the standard Anteiku waiter uniform, consisting of black trousers and a gray waistcoat over a white dress shirt and a black necktie (brown cravat in the anime). In his free time, he wore casual clothes. After the steel beam incident, Kaneki bears a scar from the transplant operation on the right side of his abdomen not far from his navel. As a normal university student, Kaneki was a somewhat short and scrawny young man with little to no athletic background and preferred to read books. When the remnants of Dragon began releasing a toxin that threatened humans and ghouls alike, Kaneki ventured down into the depths of the oviduct and nullified the threat after a fierce battle with Kichimura Washuu and Dragon.Īfter the Defense of Tokyo, Kaneki and Touka currently live happily married, with a daughter and another child coming, with humans and ghouls finally united together.Īs a child, Kaneki had all the same features he has now as an adult with black hair. He was later extracted from the monstrous appendage by a collaboration between the remaining members of Goat and the CCG. Kaneki has since then formed the organization he named Goat.Īs a result of a plan carried out by Kichimura Washuu, Kaneki morphed into the Dragon (竜, Ryū), a huge, uncontrollable kagune that destroyed large portions of Tokyo. Six months after the operation, ghouls came to know him by the moniker of the Black Reaper (黒い死神, Kuroi Shinigami).Īfter defeating Arima and Eto, having unveiled their joint plan to raise a one-eyed ghoul who could stand as the hope for all ghouls, he calls himself the One-Eyed King (隻眼の王, Sekigan no Ō). His memories were initially lost to him, but regained during the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation. Two years following his defeat against Kishou Arima, he lived under the identity of Haise Sasaki ( 佐々木 ( ササキ ) 琲 ( ハイ ) 世 ( セ ), Sasaki Haise), a Rank 1 Ghoul Investigator who served as the mentor of the CCG's Quinx Squad. His kakuja form's distinct appearance earned him the alias Centipede (ムカデ, Mukade). Ken Kaneki ( 金 ( カネ ) 木 ( キ ) 研 ( ケン ), Kaneki Ken) is the main protagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul series. a tragedy." - Ken Kaneki, Tokyo Ghoul Chapter 1 if, for argument's sake, you were to write a story with me in the lead role, it would certainly be. I'm just a college student who likes to read, like you could find anywhere. It will be interesting to see if and how it heals."I'm not the protagonist of a novel or anything. The return of the iconic black hair will be a thrill for longtime fans of the series - but Black Reaper's arrival in Tokyo Ghoul was not without sacrifice: Ken/Haise/Reaper loses an arm battling the Owl's pawn, Kanae. Kaneki calls Urie weak for letting his friend die, much the same way he expresses disdain for the weakness of the young Kaneki.įrom what we've seen so far in the anime, "Black Reaper" still has Haise's control, but is more like Ken, with a raging fire now lit in his soul, and the bad attitude to match. It's significant that the Black Reaper persona rose out of a moment where Haise (in his mind) is strangling the child version of Kaneki - an implication that's hammered home when Reaper later chastises Urie over the death of Shirazu. Haise Sasaki, by contrast, was extremely composed and chipper, acting as a calm and wise fatherly figure for his Quinx Squad family. "Ken" was a shy, sensitive, downtrodden boy, who we learn has been taking abuse ever since his days as a child, when his mom would beat him. "Black Reaper" is the first time we've seen Ken Kaneki truly embrace his power and ruthlessness as a one-eyed ghoul, and let it fly.
